It seems not long ago I was writing on this same subject. But here it is again, my favorite time of year… fall! I know I’m not alone in saying that fall is my favorite time of year. The cooler weather, the changing color of the leaves, the fall festivals, pumpkin patches, local farm visits, haunted hayrides and more! New York State epitomizes what one thinks about when they think of fall in the United States.
Now that fall is here, there is already a list of day trips and local excursions that I want to do. And, of course on that list is a fall camping weekend before many of the New York campgrounds say goodbye to the 2015 camping season. Here is a listing of some of the fall activities topping my list this year…
One of the best things about the fall season in New York is the beautiful scenery created by the changing color of the leaves. There are many ways to see the fall foliage including driving tours, a foliage ride by rail, boat, airplane, or even hot air balloons. The I Love NY foliage report, makes keeping tabs on when to see peak foliage is easy.
Featuring a long history, New York state is a perfect area for those on a quest to find a haunted location. Whether it’s a ghost hunt, haunted hayride, a haunted walking tour, or a stay at a haunted inn, there is something for every scare seeker. There are opportunities to get a scare all over the state. The Haunted History Trail of New York State website will guide you to haunting opportunities.
Local Farm Fun
New York State has numerous local farms featuring seasonal produce and other locally made products. In the fall, many of these farms feature everything from pumpkin and apple picking to hayrides and corn mazes and other fun fall activities. Most of these farms are family friendly and offer something for kids of every age. On the I Love NY website, you’ll find a listing of New York State farms offering fall activities near you.
There are of course festivals throughout the spring and summer, but fall offers the opportunity for some special festival events such as Oktoberfests, harvest festivals, and various wine festivals. Don’t miss out on some fun!
Though at the end of the year, fall is a time for many new beginnings in the world of sports – both national and collegiate. For football, hockey, and basketball, fall marks the start of the season and/or pre-season. New York is home to some great professional teams in these sports as well as college teams providing you with the opportunity to attend a home game near you. In addition to professional and college sports, there are many sports that are ideal for the fall season as the weather cools down including fishing, canoeing, and bike riding.
While planning your activities for the season, especially if you're looking to take an overnight trip or extended weekend, don't forget fall is a great time for camping with cooler weather and smaller crowds. Many campgrounds offer accommodations that are cool-weather friendly including cabins, cottages, yurts, and other on-site rentals. To find a campground with availability, check out NY Cabin Rentals to find your desired room type, many even offering online reservations.
Whatever your preference, fall offers a wide variety of new activities and fun throughout the season. Don't miss out on this year's fall fun as the winter season will be upon us before we know it!
